“My family is incredibly supportive of my decision to run for re-election this year, but I know that the next six years will be extremely challenging for this country,” Scott said. “I believe the best thing I can do for my country and my family is finish the term I was elected to serve.”

Scott had been considering running for re-election in 2020, but says recent controversies surrounding the impeachment inquiry into President Trump have made him realize he needs to devote more time to his constituents back home.

“To be honest with you, I would be running for a pretty narrow re-election,” Scott told WRAL News. “And I’m just not sure I’ve got the bandwidth to be able to do that at this particular time.”

Earlier this year, Scott faced intense backlash for his comments that the “New South” does not have many opportunities for black Americans.

“What I am saying is the New South has not helped the black race,” Scott said. “We’ve lost 30 years in this region of this country, and it’s because we did not come together in the ’80s.”

The backlash caused Scott to step down from the U.S. Senate Small Business Committee.

“I regret the comments I made in 2013 about the state of South Carolina and regret that I am leaving the committee,” Scott said, adding the panel has done a lot for his home state. “I wish the committee and the entire government well and I wish all of the senators well.”

Now that Scott is not running for re-election, he says he will be able to devote himself to his constituents.

“I’m not losing sleep at night,” he said. “This is a calling. This is a calling. People do that. The decision was made easier by the fact that I don’t have to run.”

Scott is currently the longest-serving black Republican in the U.S. Senate. In 2016, Scott was elected to a second term in the Senate and made history when he became the first African-American Senator from South Carolina.Plasticity in an
