In the early 1980s, some CAD operators in the United States Army Electronic Systems Division (ESD) developed an early example of a CAD application that ran on a microcomputer and could be used by one operator working at a single graphics terminal. Unfortunately, this was the first example of a software application called CAD, not the type of CAD application that was marketed to and used by CAD operators. One of the designers of this early example of a CAD application was Albert W. Mueller, a computer engineer who was then assigned to the CAD group at ESD.
ESD employed many engineers who were interested in programming. One of these engineers, John R. Gray, Jr., a computer systems expert who had just completed his doctoral work at Carnegie Mellon University, was assigned to the CAD group. Gray believed that the work he did for his dissertation demonstrated how to use a microcomputer and a graphics adapter to accomplish the tasks for which CAD operators required, and he convinced the members of the CAD group to develop a CAD application that would run on microcomputers.
Gray wanted the CAD application to be easy to use. He also believed that the developers of CAD applications should be paid for their work. ESD had a grant program that was funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) called the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Microelectronics for Defense (MFD) Program. To be eligible for funding, the programs had to demonstrate that they could develop microcomputer-based CAD applications that could satisfy the requirements for certain industrial and commercial applications.
The CAD group at ESD was one of the first teams that received a DARPA Microelectronics for Defense grant to develop a microcomputer-based CAD application. Gray and Mueller are credited with being the designers of the first application called EDSD CAD.
After the ESD CAD group received its grant, the group set up a small design team. After about a year, the team had developed and tested an early version of EDSD CAD. They used it to produce a detailed schematic of the prototype of the first radar acquisition device that ESD planned to develop and build.
The ESD team had created a prototype design that could be readily modified to meet specific requirements. The device was a miniature radar antenna with a large rectangular-shaped display screen. Gray and Mueller had developed an application called EDSD CAD that was designed to solve a specific problem for which they had already identified a solution. In contrast
AutoCAD also supports a host of tools for using text and graphics in a production environment. These tools work directly with AutoCAD drawing files. In addition to text and graphics, other output can be created through the use of other tools, including publication-quality output.

AutoCAD is used extensively for desktop publishing, creating original two and three-dimensional design elements, standard and custom post-processing, and even complete CAD-based design environments.
Because of the use of native CAD systems, most of the advanced tools and processes have existed in the AutoCAD family for many years, while today’s complex products have seen the process and design improvements and evolved significantly. Because of its architecture, there is now a plethora of software development kits and advanced tools to help users advance their products. The ability to create such tools without the use of AutoCAD greatly increases productivity and the ability of users to have access to the tools at an affordable cost.
Products that make use of this ability are:
Post-Processing application – All major desktop publishing packages (e.g. Corel DTP) use CAD libraries such as AutoCAD to automate the process of creating pages from 3D modeling data, where normally they are performed manually by drawing the page outline manually and laying out text and graphics on the page using positioning tools.
Software development kits – These are application programming interfaces, or “APIs”, that enable third-party developers to write their own applications using the 3D modeling data of the CAD applications. In order for the third-party developer to access the data from the main software, they must use one of the CAD platforms (e.g., AutoCAD or Civil 3D). An example of this is the 3D visualisation and publishing package, 3DSVSE, developed by Inventables. Inventables uses the APIs provided by AutoCAD for 3D modelling and publishing.
Tools to complement AutoCAD – There are other free and paid third-party tools that run on top of AutoCAD and other software, such as:

If you are on Windows, go to the menu bar and select File -> New. If you are on Mac, go to the menu bar and select File -> New.
Choose the file type and enter the template name. You may want to rename the template to the name of the contest.
Select a filename for the new drawing.
Now, click the ellipse in the top left-hand corner of the screen and select the Edit panel.
In the upper-right hand corner of the Edit panel, you should see a small four-pointed star with three dots to its left. Click this and select the Set Current tool. The tool name should now be set to Set Current, and the arrow in the upper-right corner should be pointing down.
Click the round grey ball to the right of the Set Current tool.
The tooltip in the upper right hand corner should now say Current, next to the arrow pointing down.
Drag the X-axis from any point to another point and the tool should snap to it. Remember to hold the Shift key while you drag so that you don’t accidentally move the object in the other direction.
Now, click the template file (or the newly created drawing) and then click the square to open the Properties panel.
In the lower-left corner of the Properties panel, you should see four ellipses. Click the first ellipse and select the Save as Template option.
In the Save as Template dialog box, name the template “buildit” and press the OK button. Make sure you check the option to save it in the same directory as Autocad.
Now, go back to your drawing.
In the Properties panel, the Save as Template dialog box will be checked. Click the Create a Drawing button.
Now, select the newly created drawing.
In the Properties panel, the Save as Template dialog box will not be checked. Click the checkbox to the right of the Save as Template dialog box and press the OK button. A new drawing will now be open, and should be named “makeit”.
