Chlorpyrifos (CP), one of the most common insecticides used in agriculture, has been responsible for the development of resistance in several insect pests. Among others, Ocimum sanctum, and O. basilicum are commonly used as medicinal plants in India. In the present study, the concentration of CP in its metabolite, 3,5,6-trichloropyridinol, was estimated in all the samples. The CP resistance of O. basilicum and O. sanctum plants was analyzed using the Cassava-Leaf Disk Bioassay technique. The concentrations of CP in the leaves and roots of O. sanctum and O. basilicum were in the range of 0.05-0.41 μg mL(-1) and 0.42-1.86 μg mL(-1), respectively. Bioassay analysis showed that both the plants were highly resistant to CP and 9.5-fold and 6.4-fold lower concentration of CP was needed to cause 50% mortality in root and leaf tissues, respectively.
